Rising from the Ashes

When Weston-super-Mare’s Edwardian Grand Pier burnt down in July 2008, there were many who mourned its passing. Happily, less than a year later work started on the construction of a new pier, which its owners describe as ‘for the 21st Century’. A new Pavilion is set to rise from the ashes of the old one, with purlins and side rails from cold rolled steel specialists Metsec providing the framework to hold the structure’s cladding.

Metsec’s lightweight lattice beams support boxer’s roof

Light welterweight boxing champion Ricky Hatton has a lightweight long span solution in the roof of his new gym at Hyde, Greater Manchester. Part of the gym has a curved roof, which is supported by 21 lightweight steel lattice beams, designed and manufactured by Metsec, the leading producer of lightweight, cold rolled steel building solutions. The high strength to weight ratio of Metsec steel lattice beams makes them ideal for spans of up to 40 metres.

Metsec adapts steel framing system for dramatic new role

Lightweight steel stud sections from Metsec’s steel framing wall system have been used to construct a 16 metre angled wall for a dramatic new role – forming the 13m radius curved and 8o tapered rear auditorium wall at Shrewsbury’s new Theatre Severn. Metsec’s cleated continuous stud system demonstrates its versatility at the theatre in a design feature that is visible internally and externally. The design and specification of the system enabled it to be built rapidly and, most importantly, in a manageable and safe way providing a dry wall construction.

Metsec wins 10km challenge

Cold rolled steel specialist Metsec has supplied over 10km of steel purlins and side rails for Alternative Hotel Group’s (AHG) current £60 million expansion programme, including new Village Hotel developments at Ashton-under-Lyne, Leeds and Elstree. A fourth Village Hotel, in Farnborough, Hampshire, is scheduled to open in the spring of 2009. When development is complete, AHG will have over 20 hotels in the Village brand across England and Wales.

Galliford Try has unlocked the derelict site of the former Camden Town Hall by using Metsec’s pre-engineered light gauge galvanised steel framing system to create a 140 bed Travelodge Hotel partially cantilevered over a London Underground station.
